City's burn ban still in effect

Colorado Springs fire officials are reminding people that a burn ban implemented June 17 is still in effect.

The ban prohibits the use of bonfires, model rockets, prescribed burns, campfires, outside fires on private property and outdoor cooking in city parks and open spaces. The fire department said violating these could result in fines up to $500 or 90 days in jail.

Low fuel moisture levels, continued warm temperatures and a drying trend prompted the ban, officials said.

Outdoor smoking is allowed, as long as materials are disposed of in non-combustible containers. Fires in natural gas fire pits and the use of charcoal or propane grills are also allowed.
